Tunog Kalye started out as a radio show that showcased live performances from promising Pinoy bands. The show was then called ‘Live na Live’ and even before MTV Unplugged and way before acoustic artists/bands became popular, the show was already doing a stripped acoustic set-up for the show hence the name ‘Tunog Kalye’.
Tunog Kalye has been graced by some of the most popular names in the history
of Pinoy Music.

The Youth
The Youth is a Filipino band. Their music is a mixture of punk and new wave, influenced heavily by The Wuds. The band was once disappeared in the limelight, however, they are on their way back to the mainstream.
History The band was first dubbed as the ”Boyish Days”, formed around 1989 Dodong Cruz, Erap Carrasco, Pat Epino on guitars and the bassist John Olidan. They played music suited during the time, new wave and punk music which is quite saleable for the radio station XB102’s Capital Radio. The station saw the origins of what would be one of the most famous local acts of 90’s.
Pat eventually left the band to form his own band, H8red. Raul Velez joined in and assumed the guitar functions. Upon the arrival of Pat, the group’s name was changed and called as The Youth. With their diverse influences, The Youth was able to produce their very own, signature sound.
On 1990, Robert Tan of Backseat Records took them under his wing. They were able to record and release an independent album. Like any other indie productions, the album had a limited success. It is a collectors’ item today.
The band started performing in different underground gigs. They even called themselves as “Da Wol” just to join the RJ Battle of the Bands on 1990. The contest is strictly for amateur bands only, meaning a status of the band having not recorded an album yet. They made it to the top and won the contest.
During some time of the contest, Raul and John left the band. The departure of two members was immediately replaced by a single Robert Javier, making it a classic thee-piece line-up band. As soon as he started jamming with the band, he injected his own off-beat humor into the band’s songs and performances.
Due to Dodong’s persistence, Club Dredd finally agreed to book the band on 1991. Considering their high-volume, high-energy and highly-impromptu performances, the band slowly established small followers after several months of gigging and performing. Sooner, they became a headline of the club, their shows ere sold-out, sometimes twice a week or more. Because they successfully combined punk, new wave, heavy rock and humor, audiences ate up their irreverent humor and distinct musicality. People returned again and again because each presentation has some unexpected surprises.
1993 witnessed the band’s signing up a major label. Few months after the Eraserheads signed up with BMG, The Youth was contracted by Polycosmic Record Label. It started the so-called “alternative music boom”. On 1994, the band released their debut album but remained untitled. It contained the carrier single, Multong Bakla which became an instant hit. Robert started writing songs. The five songs first recorded in an indie album were included. The Youth was gained massive airplays over different pop stations across the nation.
The follow-up album was delayed as the band performed concerts all over the country and their fist album sold almost a 100,000 copies. On 1997, the much-awaited sophomore album was released entitled Tao Po. Though the album sales were similar to that major debut album, the results were not as positive as it expects. With lack of airplays and promotions, probable gigs slowly declined. The Youth was also known for creating riotous concerts. One example was at the Araneta Coliseum where the band wasn’t able to play a single song due to riots breaking out whenever they started playing. It was eventually stopped.
Relationship between members was a stress especially for the two opposing songwriters whose influences caused the break-up of the band. What shocked the fans was when Dodong pursued a solo career and unexpectedly signed up a solo deal with the JML Records. This means the end of the band’s heydays. The two remaining members went ahead and formed Warehouse Club.
Dodong solo career was a moderate success as his debut album, Experimento hit gold status. As the label fizzled out into a newly-formed Star Records, Dodong was put into obscurity for several years.
On November 1999, as the band was reformed, they performed at Myric’s. The gig was supposed to be a one-night gig only. However, the band’s magic was ever-present which led the band to play back to the music mainstream.
Currently, the members were composed of Dodong Cruz as the band’s vocalist and guitarist, Robert Javier on bass and vocals while Erap Carrasco deals with the drums. On 2004, they released another album named Jack Daniel’s In Session…Manila.

Yano
Yano is a Filipino band of Alternative rock, Folk, Punk rock and Pinoy rock. It was formerly a band with several members. However, the band disbanded and was revived by the only remaining original member as a one-man band.
Yano originated in Manila, Philippines. It was formed on 1993 and the original line-up was composed of Dong Abay on vocals and Eric Gancio on guitars. Together with Larry Mapolon, they met in Patatag, a vocal ensemble and decided to form NG, a Filipino band with other artists.
They named the band ”Yano” after Dong Abay read the Talahulugang Pilipino and encountered Yano which means simple in Tagalog. Onie Badiang jumped in as the band’s bassist and Nowie Favil on drums. However, Nowie left the group due to his commitments with the other band, Ang Grupong Pendong. Other drummers for the band include Nonong Timbalez, Jun Nogoy and Harley Alarcon.
At the home studio of Joey Abala, an alternative artist, they recorded their demo. Kumusta Ka?, one of the demo’s tracks is a song about EDSA Revolution and instantly heard in many local radio stations. This brough the band Yano on different gigs and performed in club circuits as Mayrics, Club Dredd and 70s Bistro.
On 1994, they recorded their first ever full-length album. The album carried the name of the band as its title, Yano and was released under Alpha Records. The album spawned several hit tracks as “Banal Na Aso”, “Santong Kabay”, “Tsinelas”, and “Esem”. Following its release were numerous well-done concerts nationwide.
It was re-released by BMG and reached the quadruple platinum status in 1994. They have recorded two more studio albums namely: Banal on 1996 and Tara on 1997. Both were released under BMG Records.
After releasing these three studio albums Dong Abay stopped and left the band due to fame-induced pressure. Later after Abay left the group, Yano disbanded.
Abay was struggling with depression for five years and after the latter’s recovery, he formed a band named Pan and released their debut album entitled Pamaso Ng Payaso on 2003. However, Pan suffered the same fate when Abay decided to pursue school in U.P. Diliman. Currently, he is pursuing a career as an independent artist.
A compilation album entitled Best of Yano was released under BMG Records on 2001.
Gancio on the other hand, returned to his beloved Davao after Abay’s extinction. On 2004, he recorded and released an EP for his Sa Bandang Huli, his debut album. As an independent artist, he did all the instruments and mixed music in a PC-based software.
Gancio revived the long-been-quiet Yano. Now, Yano is a one-man band and currently performed in Davao though with two other sessionists musicians. Accordingly, he will be releasing an album, not as his second but the fourth album for the band, Yano.

Eraserheads
Eraserheads is a renowned Filipino rock band. It is one of the most famous bands in OPM history. The band is considered as “The Beatles of the Philippines”. They engage in Pinoy rock, Alternative rock, pop music, reggae and Synth Rock. The band was active from year 1989 until the break-up on year 2002.
It was formed 1989 by Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcos Adoro. It happened when the two college bands of UP- Diliman, Curfew and Sunday School were looking for new members for their group. Buddy Zabala was the bassist and Marcus Adoro on guitars of the band Curfew. Sunday School’s vocalist and drummer were Ely Buendia and Raimund Marasigan respectively. They met on December on the same year. The two bands decided to combine forces and called themselves Eraserheads, after the movie Eraserheads. They did covers mostly until they realized that they are not good in covering other hits so they gave more attention in writing their own materials. Not soon enough, their original songs composed earned recognition. Among them was Pare Ko, a pop song became acceptable among public.
On January 6, 1991, they recorded a demo-tape in Raimund’s garage and tried their luck to different record labels but nothing seems interested and rejected them. It may be because it is no pop enough and was made on a cheap tape. On May, Robin Rivera, Humanities professor of UP helped them record a better version of the demo tape. It was called POP-U as a response to those who rejected and turned them down. At the same time, Ely was working with BMG Records at day and wrote songs for the band at night. The songs composed caught the attention of BMG Records and give The Eraserheads a try.
In 1992, The Eraserheads was officially signed into contract with BMG Records for three years. In July, the band started recording Ultraelectromagneticpop!, their debut album featuring tracks like Pare Ko, Toyang, Tindahan Ni Aling Nena, Ligaya etc. Walang Hiya Pare Ko, a sanitized version of Pare Ko was also included in the album. BMG releases 5,000 copies as initial but instantly became a smash. 300,000 copies were released by BMG at the end of the year. The album turned sextuple platinum. Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI) attempted to oppose and censor Pare Ko but with no success. Thus The Eraserheadsmania was born.
On October 1994, a follow-up album entitled Circus was released still under BMG Records. The band said the album described their life after their successful album. The album was said to be unpredictable and unconventional and its styles and moods varied. Band members were considered as good songwriters and musicians. Circus contains songs such as Kailan, Magasin, Alapaap, With A Smile and Sembreak. The album turned gold in 30 days selling almost 20,000 copies but it eventually turned into quintuple platinum selling 200,000 copies. And liken to the first album, it has also its own controversy when Sen. Tito Sotto banned the Alapaap because of its alleged promotion on drug abuse but the band denied it.
Another album was launched on 1995 entitled Cutterpillow. It turned to gold in an instance and achieved platinum status several times. The band soon shot the video of Ang Huling El Bimbo from the album. The band even earned international recognition as “Moon Man” in MTV Video Music Awards. In 1996, the band come up with the idea of releasing an EP entitled Fruitcake and was followed shortly by the release of a companion storybook of the same title.
Series of gig happened in year 1997. Sentosa Pop Festival in Singapore in March was the band’s first overseas gig. A mini U.S. tour followed on May. Four months after, on September, they received the Moon Man trophy in New York. The Eraserheads is the first Filipino artist to receive such awards. Few days after the said awards, Sticker Happy, their fifth album was released. After a month, a series of shows and performances were held in Singapore for MTV Asia.
In 1998, The Eraserheads was chosen to represent Philippines at the annual ‘Asia Live Dream ’98 in Tokyo, Japan. They left Philippines for yet another U.S. Tour on May from Oakland to Los Angeles and to New York under the Happy Box production outfit. On August, Aloha Milkyway was released containing chart-topping songs that have been re-mastered and other five new tracks.
The band performed sold-out gig on 1999 in countries like, Hong Kong, Sydney and Dubai. The next album was again released on May of the same year entitled Natin99.
Another tour in America took place in between the months May and June, The Pop Machine Tour- USA2000, taking them from New York to Chicago and to California. Two years after from the last album, the band releases Carbon Stereoxide on March 2001. The much-awaited album contains fresh tracks such as Maskara, Playground and Hula.
In the middle of March 2002, it was reported and was confirmed that Ely Buendia, band’s vocalist left the band. According to an interview, Buendia had some miscommunication with a roadie when he was late for some time at a male gig. Buendia was disgusted when he discovered that three of his members believed in the roadie. He felt being betrayed and confirmed his quitting through SMS.
Without much ado, the three remaining members decided to pursue and continue the band. They look for another vocalist and in just few weeks they are able to introduce Kris Gorra- Dancel as the band’s new vocalist. However, Adoro left the band after few months and the remaining members called them another group as Cambio with another members, Diego Mapa and Ebe Dancel.

The Teeth
Teeth was born during the alternative rock boom of the 1990s and exploded onto the airwaves with Laklak, a tale of youthful excess that became an anthem for drinking. The track topped the charts of the Philippines' adventurous alternative rock station LA-105 for 12 weeks. Teeth was formed in September 1993 by Glenn Jacinto (vocals), Jerome Velasco (guitars), Peding Narvaja (bass), and Mike Dizon (drums). Narvaja, Velasco, and Dizon were originally in a group called Riftshifta, while Jacinto was in Loudhouse. Signed to Warner Music Philippines, Teeth released their self-titled debut album in 1995; the LP went double-platinum. Laklak was re-recorded and crossed over into the mainstream, stirring controversy with its alcohol-fueled lyrics; it was voted Song of the Year at the 1995 NU 107 Rock Awards. The cheaply made video for Teeth's second single Prinsesa directed by Odin Fernandez was even played on MTV Asia. However, in 1996 Jacinto was hospitalized for a lung ailment; his illness left him unable to promote the album or fulfill concert dates for a year. The band attempted using other singers to temporarily replace Jacinto, but the group's chemistry was lost. In 1997, Jacinto recovered and Teeth recorded Time Machine. Although the alternative rock scene in Manila had begun to wane. When Narvaja left Teeth to move to the U.S., he was replaced by Andrew Sergio. In 1999, the band released I Was a Teenage Tree. The album contained the single Shooting Star, which was awarded Song of the Year at the NU 107 Rock Awards in 2000. In 2003, Dogs Can Fly (Teeth's Finest) was released.
In 1998, Teeth’s drummer, Mike Dizon co-founded Sandwich with Eraserheads’ drummer, Raimund Marasigan; and later in 2005, Pedicab. After Teeth’s Greatest Hits, Dogs Can Fly (Teeth's Finest), was released, frontman Glenn Jacinto moved to California and he still performs regularly there. Also during 2003, former-Eraserheads frontman Ely Buendia formed The Mongols with Teeth’s Guitarist Jerome Velasco which was later joined by Teeth’s bassist Dok Sergio. As Jerome Velasco left The Mongols in 2005 to pursue a career in audio engineering and recording, it was later renamed into Pupil. Meanwhile, Jerome Velasco remained as a co-writer and producer for Pupil’s Beautiful Machines song from the album of the same name. As of 2007, Jerome Velasco is the chief musical producer for Pupil’s second album.Jerome and Dok are both members of the dreampop / electronica band, “Daydream Cycle” with The Mongols’/Pupil’s Bogs Jugo and Rivermaya’s Japs Sergio. After the short hiatus, Teeth still performs live without Jacinto and usually Dok Sergio takes the singing duties and sometimes other artists also take sessions as main vocals such as Ebe Dancel of Sugarfree. Sergio also sings Teeth songs with his current band, Pupil.

Siakol
Siakol is a Filipino band with 4 members. Members called themselves ”Siakol”, pertaining to a free, happy and sometimes naughty state of mind. They made their presence felt with their hard-hitting song and gained recognition from the listening public. They best known with their song, Lakas-Tama.
Siakol was formed in a summer of 1994 by bestfriends, Noel Palomo and Wowie Flores. None of them were rich, possessing only an old guitar and songs no one ever heard but them. So they decided to form a group that would awaken the minds of troubled youths in their hometown. The alliance was formed, solidifying the line-up as Anthony Cervantes and James Rodriguez were added.
Manuel Rovera Palomo, much recognized as “Noel Palomo” was born on August 19, 1977 on Leo. One of the pioneers of the band, he is used in writing songs and particularly in into OPM Pinoy Rock.
